JESUS DIED TO SIN

For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Romans 6:10

Romans 6:2 states that believers have died to sin. Obviously, there is a difference in Jesus dying to sin and a believer dying to sin. Believers died to sin because they are sinners. Jesus was not and is not a sinner.

The statement in Romans 6:10 that Jesus “died to sin,” can be translated He died “with reference to sin” and should be translated that way here. Jesus “was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” When Jesus died, the possibility of Him ever sinning no longer existed. That is a possible meaning of Jesus dying to sin.

Romans 3:25 describes Jesus as He “whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood.” Through His death, God made it possible for believers to be forgiven of their sins. This is another explanation of Jesus dying to sin.

First Corinthians 15:45 refers to Jesus as “The Last Adam.” Just as we all became sinners when Adam, the head of the natural race, became a sinner, believers died with Jesus as he died on the cross. Romans 6:8 says, “we died with Christ.” Romans 6:7 states, “… he who has died has been freed from sin.”

Jesus, then, died with reference to sin in that when He died as the head of the spiritual race, He freed from sin those who would receive Him as their Lord and Savior.

We experience the forgiveness of our sins when we receive Him as our Lord and Savior. We experience our death to sin when we live out the five commands that remove us from being under law and place us under grace (Romans 6:11-13).
