LOVING GOD
"Because he has set his love
upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because
he has known My name." Psalm 91:14
Psalm 91 is a much-loved Psalm that
begins with, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide
under the shadow of the Almighty.” Verses 9 and 10 continue, “Because you
have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling
place, No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your
dwelling …”
In verses 1-13, the psalmist lists a series of blessing for those who put
their trust in God. Then in verse 14-16, the Lord speaks. He expresses what
He will do for those who love Him. He seems to be saying that those who
trust Him also love Him.
When Jesus was asked, “What is the greatest commandment,” He immediately
responded with, “You shall love the Lord your God.”
In Galatians 5:22, Paul writes that love is the fruit of the Spirit.
We are filled with the Spirit when flesh—the sin nature in us that prevents
us from being filled with the Spirit—is put out of power through our
experiencing our union with Christ in the spiritual crucifixion, burial and
resurrection. We experience that union through faith and choice as indicated
in the five commands of Romans 6:11-13.
High on the list of the blessings that are ours through loving God is
mentioned in Romans 8:28.
And we know that all things
work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the
called according to His purpose.
