MUCH MORE TO LEARN
I still have many things to
say to you, but you cannot bear them now. John 16:12
Every Christian should look at
Jesus’ statement in John 16:12 as a constant personal word to himself
regardless of his age or the amount of Scriptual knowledge he has. Not one
of us has arrived spiritually. There is more for all of us to learn.
A Christian who has become bored with reading the Bible may ignore this
statement of Jesus. However, it is thrilling news to one who has a passion
to continue to grow spiritually.
Christians, who are growing, are never satisfied with their spiritual growth
or how much Scriptural knowledge they have. Spiritual growth and biblical
growth go together. We do not have one without the other.
A college Bible professor often said to his students, “There is a lot of
reading about the Bible, but there is not a lot of reading of the Bible.”
His words drew some of his students to the Scriptures.
There is no argument with the fact that reading a book can be a means of
spiritual growth if that book provides more understanding of the Scripture.
But a believer who loves God’s word will never be satisfied to receive all
of his understanding of the Scripture out of books. He will continue to
study the Bible.
Jesus followed His statement about believers having more truth to learn with
an encouraging promise. He said:
… when He, the Spirit of
truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth …
The Holy Spirit came to live in us
when we received Jesus as our Lord and Savior. When a believer lives by
grace, he is continually filled with the Holy Spirit. His Spirit-filled
passion for the word of God will result in thrilling revelations from the
Scriptures.
