NEW GLORY IN THE NEW COVENANT
But we all, with unveiled
face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being
transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the
Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:18
These verses tell us that the New
Covenant is lived out by the enablement of the Holy Spirit, and in the new
covenant, we are free from the law.
Most of the chapter, though, points out that there is a greater glory in the
new covenant than there was in the old covenant. The chief example Paul
gives for this is that of the glory of God on the face of Moses.
Under the first covenant, when Moses would enter the presence of God with an
uncovered face, the glory of God came upon his face. However, when he left
the presence of God, he would cover his face. He did not want the people to
see the glory fading away. The message is that there was a glory in the
first covenant that would fade away because the first covenant would become
obsolete (Hebrews 8:13).
In verse 18 of 2 Corinthians 3, Paul says that under the new covenant we
will have an increasing glory to come upon us by looking into the face of
Jesus. This must be a reference to believers’ gazing into Jesus’ face while
experiencing their enthronement with him.
This also would imply that in the new covenant, we never have to leave our
fellowship with Jesus, as Moses had to leave the presence of the Father.
We experience the blessings of the new covenant only as we live out our
union with Christ.
