DRAWING NEAR
Therefore, brethren, having
boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living
way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,
and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a
true heart in full assurance of faith … Hebrews 10:19-22
Drawing near to the Holiest (the
Most Holy Place) is another way of saying drawing near to God. Drawing near
to the Holiest is the same as Paul’s being seated with Christ in the
heavenly places.
The Greek word translated “draw near” in Hebrews 10:22 is found also in
Hebrews 12:22, 4:16 and 7:25.
Hebrews 12:22-24 greatly expands what it means to draw near to the
Holiest—and to Paul’s being seated with Christ in heavenly places. This
passage says that when you draw near to the Holiest:
… you have come (drawn near)
right up into Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly
Jerusalem, and to the gathering of countless happy angels; to the
general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in
heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made
perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of
sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
Hebrews 4:16 speaks of drawing near
to the throne of grace to find mercy and grace. Hebrews 7:25 speaks of
believers drawing near to Jesus who intercedes for their spiritual growth.
The privilege of drawing near to all the blessings mentioned in these
passages is available to all believers who experience their union with
Christ.
