WALKING BY FAITH
… we walk by faith, not by
sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7
A life of faith is a life of
believing in and experiencing an invisible world. It is the opposite of
walking by sight. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the substance of things
hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
The Book of Hebrews details the differences between the old covenant that
God made with the Israelites at Mount Sinai and the new covenant brought
into being by Jesus. The old covenant has features that one can see. The new
covenant is about living in a world we cannot see. The faith chapter of the
Bible, found in Hebrews eleven, includes the following statement about
Moses:
By faith he forsook Egypt,
not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is
invisible. Hebrews 11:27
In a passage on suffering, Paul
writes:
Therefore we do not lose
heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is
being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a
moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of
glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the
things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary,
but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
Suffering drives us to God for His
grace. His grace will help us face the suffering. In doing so, we are like
Moses. We see Him who is invisible.
In a revealing doxology, Paul writes in 1 Timothy 1:17:
Now to the King eternal,
immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory
forever and ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:17
There are plenty of observable
evidences of the invisible world. These encourage us to live by faith in a
world we cannot see. It is through trusting in resources we cannot see that
we live by faith. When we live by faith, we live by grace.
